The short answer to this is yes (and no).
I’m sure it must be tempting to wake up the next morning and check the astrology app on your phone. Nothing gets people out of bed quick enough like being told that a big opportunity was waiting for them that day. Whether the readings reflect reality or not remains to be proven. But one thing that’s definitely true is that horoscope readings offer validation, confidence, motivation, and maybe even help us to verbalize some of the qualities we never realize we had.
Horoscopes are based on stories that astrologers tell us when they interpret the 12 constellations or the clusters of stars that form zodiac signs in the sky when drawn together like how you would connect dots on paper. From as early as 6,000 years ago, western astrologers believed that each zodiac sign could influence events on earth – something scientists have long refuted as baseless. Despite the counterarguments from scientists, including one stating that stars were too far away to have any effect on earth, astrology remains popular today, even for those with Chinese and Hindu roots. Horoscope readings are everywhere on the internet and so many of us know our star signs even if some of us don’t even believe it.
I’m not saying that astrology is not real. It predates the field of science and has been around longer than many major religions. But I do wish to point out that it is entirely man-made and since readings almost completely depend on an astrologer’s interpretation – which can be subjective – I don’t think that it is something that should be treated seriously. Should a politician heed an astrologer’s advice? I think that could be dangerous. Should you believe that Scorpios are intelligent people? Well, I don’t see the harm in that.
Personally, I’m not into horoscopes and I have my own reasons for it, which mostly has to do with the gaps in astrology that don’t seem to make sense to me. If a horoscope reading tells me that greater wealth is in store for the Taurus this week, am I supposed to believe that every Taurus individual was going to become richer at the same time? Even if they were born on the same date and time, I might still be doubtful.
Another thing that’s common about many horoscope readings is how vaguely worded they are. Some of them are so broadly described that they could be applied to anyone across the 12 zodiac signs. However, I am also aware that there are a few professional astrologers who can give very detailed readings and interpretations of specific data such as the movement of the sun and other planets in relation to a birth sign. But no matter how specific they can be, I do hope that everyone takes those readings with a pinch of salt.
